Lighten Up

Ok, so things have been a little heavy on my blog for a week now. It's time to lighten things up. In hopes of bringing some smiles to some faces that have cried many, many tears in the last 8 days, here is a recap of some of the lighter things that have happened this week:

* I may just be totally out of touch, but have you ever heard of a breavement gift?? I'm sure if I searched google, I would find a wealth of information of this once foreign-to-me idea. Jenna and I were on the phone last week as she opened her mail one day. All of the sudden she was like, "What the heck?" It was her first bereavement gift. Now, some of these things made sense. For example, several people have actually sent money to help cover funeral costs (which, by the way, are NOT cheap!). Other things, not so much. They have been given a lamp and a set of pots & pans. Really?! It just seems a little wierd. But at least it gives us something to laugh about. On my way home from the airport I called her and told her I was sending her some money to add text messaging to her cell phone plan for the next 3 months. We had been texting each other a ton since Carter's birth, and this was running her 20 cents each. She was really excited at the prospect of having unlimited texting, and we got a really good laugh when we realized that she could technically refer to this as one of her most odd bereavement gifts.
* After the funeral, we had a police-escorted processional to the cemetary. As we were pulling out of the church parking lot, the police motorcycle took a wrong turn into a connecting parking lot with no exit. The hearse followed, but thankfully the pastor was in the next car and just sat and waited for them to realize what they had done and turn around. The next thing we saw was the hearse driving across a grassy area back to the church parking lot. I told Brent and Jenna that Carter must have really wanted to go off-roading.

There actually were a lot of other light moments this week where, in the midst of tragedy, we were able to smile and laugh. But, honestly, as I begin to type some of them, they don't seem all that funny. So I am going to leave it with just those two and let the others just be sweet memories between those of us that were there...

I am laughing so hard at the memory of Carter going off roading. Of course my son, being Brent's son, is not going to do ANYTHING traditional!
